There is an ever-increasing interest in the California Wool and Fiber Festival (CWFF) at the Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show each September in Boonville, California. The CWFF hosts the California National Wool Show, the Mendocino County Fair’s Fiber Arts competition, a spinning contest and fashion show along with various vendors of fiber products for sale, and a number of demonstrations pertinent to fiber. Enter the spinning contest on the day of the contest or request more information on the schedule page.
Fiber producers may enter fiber from their sheep and mohair goats into competition for top honors and fiber enthusiasts can enter hand made items into the Fiber Arts Competition. You are invited to observe the wool show competition on Friday as the judge evaluates each entry and grants awards in the respective classes. There is a lot to be learned in listening to a knowledgeable judge comment on the condition, character, properties and uses of various fibers.
Many vendors offer demonstrations in their booths. Take some time to visit the artists and craftsmen and engage them in a conversation about their field of expertise. A majority of the fleeces are offered for sale at this event, beginning just after the judging is complete, and some years we are lucky enough to have a fleece auction as well!
